Configuration Manager/Installation

Prerequisites

  • The account used for installation must be a membership of local Administrators group or equivalent on the target server.

Run the Setup

Mount the installation media, and navigate to <Installation media>\SMSSETUP\BIN\X64

Run setup.exe as administrator.

On the Before You Begin screen, click Next.

Select a site type

  • Central administration site
    • As a central point of administration, it provides the flexibility to support devices that are distributed across a global network infrastructure.
    • It doesn't directly support the management of devices, which is the function of a primary site. This means that at least two servers are required.
  • Primary site
    • It is used to manage devices. There must be at least one in each hierarchy.
    • The stand-alone primary site can be expanded to a central administration site at any time in the future if necessary.

If this is a lab environment, select the primary site.

Enter product key

Enter the product key and specify a software assurance expiration date, or install the evaluation edition.

Click Next to proceed.

Agree license terms

Accept all license terms and click Next.

Download required files

  • Download required files
    • Specify a download directory to download the required files.
  • Use previously downloaded files
    • Select and verify the required files downloaded.

Wait for the file to be downloaded or verified.

Select languages for server

Specify the language that the Configuration Manager Console displays.

Select languages for client

Specify the language that the client displays if matches the display language of clients.

Configure site and installation settings

  • Site code
    • Enter the site code, it must be three characters, either numbers or letters are acceptable.
    • Do not use the following Windows-reserved names: AUX CON NUL PRN SMS.
  • Site name
    • Specify a friendly name for the site. For example: San Jose HQ, Seattle branch.
  • Installation folder
    • If needed, click Browse to change the installation folder.
  • Install the Configuration Manager console
    • Install the Configuration Manager console on this server.
    • If you choose not to install the console, you can connect to this server using the console on other servers for remote management.

Configure central administration site installation

 Note:
This page appears if you are installing a central administration site.

  • Install as the first site in a new hierarchy
    • Install a new central administration site.
  • Expand an existing stand-alone primary into a hierarchy
    • Expand an existing stand-alone primary site to a central administration site.

Configure primary site settings

 Note:
This page appears if you are installing a primary site.

  • Join the primary site to an existing hierarchy
    • Install a new primary site to an existing hierarchy.
  • Install the primary site as a stand-alone site
    • Select it for small-scale deployments or testing purposes.

Specify database information

Enter the FQDN of the server that running the SQL Server instance and specify the instance name.

Leave Instance name field blank to use the default instance.

Provide a friendly database name or leave it as default, and click Next to proceed.

Specify Database Locations

The Setup uses the default locations of the instance of SQL Server.

If needed, lick Browse to change the location.

Click Next to proceed.

Configure SMS Provider setting

Enter the FQDN for SMS Provider. By default, it automatically fills in the FQDN of this server.

Configure Client Communication settings

 Note:
This page appears if you are installing a primary site.

By default, for security reasons, select All site system roles accept only HTTPS communication from clients.

Install site system roles

 Note:
This page appears if you are installing a primary site.

The Setup installs all roles and fills in the FQDN of this server by default. You can choose not to install them, or install them manually if needed.

For more information about the roles, refer to Install a Management point and Install a Distribution point.

If you selected All site system roles accept only HTTPS communication from clients on the previous screen, the setup automatically configures to use HTTPS and cannot be changed.

Know that usage data will be collected

On the Diagnostic and Usage Data screen, click Next to proceed.

Configure service connection point

 Note:
This page won't appear if you are installing a child primary site.

The service connection point provides several important functions, it can download updates for Configuration Manager and upload the usage data to Microsoft.

If you plan to deploy a cloud management gateway in Azure or use services that require Microsoft Entra ID, install a service connection point is a prerequisite.

If you don't have an Internet connection, select Skip this for now.

Review the settings

Review the settings that you've selected and click Next to proceed.

Run Prerequisite Checker

You must resolve any failed before installing, and try to resolve all Warnings.

Click Begin Install to begin the installation.
